Elcho Island Arts is an art centre owned and run by the Yolŋu people, located in Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island, off the coast of East Arnhem Land. Since 1992, it has been operated by the local community to support Yolŋu artists in sharing their culture and earning income through their artwork.
The artists are well-known for their unique designs and deep knowledge of traditional natural materials, continuing a cultural practice that has lasted thousands of years. Their art—including paintings, weavings, fibre works, carvings, and ceremonial poles—is exhibited widely and held in important collections across Australia and around the world.

Laŋarra Bush Gallery 2024
The Elcho Island Arts exhibition showcased a striking range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional sculptural works. While the artists from Galiwin’ku could not be present, their connections to Laŋarra and fellow artists was powerfully felt through their art.
For Bush Gallery, Judy Manany presented a woven echidna and dragonfly. Talking about this work, she said “I was just weaving the pandanus and trying to make any shape I can make, then came the dragonfly and other animals as I make them. I try to make new ideas all the time to show the world the artwork of Yolngu people”.

Gudumurrkuwuy’s work included a woven Djerpa (Reef Fish), and woven vesssels that elegantly held lilies that Elizabeth Rukarriwuy collected from a nearby fresh water source.
